Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Abnormalities in the temporomandibular joint, or TMD, can be caused by various factors.
TMD has multiple causes (Multifactor), with common factors often including irregular tooth alignment, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching, such as having misaligned teeth, extracting teeth without replacing them with prosthetics, habitually grinding teeth during sleep, history of head and facial trauma, and degenerative arthritis.
Commonly observed symptoms include:
- Issues related to the jaw joint and chewing system
- Grinding teeth during sleep
- Clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth
- Pain from yawning, wide mouth opening, or chewing
- Pain around the jaw joint near the ear
- Sudden changes in the alignment of the upper and lower teeth
- Restricted capacity to open the mouth
